The NVR International Conference 2025 which took place in the lively city of Amsterdam, was an incredibly enriching event centered around the theme "The Courage of Connecting Authority." This extraordinary assembly delved into the principles of NVR, examining innovative approaches to engage with and challenge authority without resorting to violence, threats or harm. It was a delight to reconnect with familiar acquaintances and build new connections with participants from over 14 different nations, each contributing unique viewpoints and insights. Having the incredible chance to be in the presence of Haim Omer, the originator of NVR and listening to his wise words as well as getting a photograph, was awe-inspiring.
Reflecting on my journey from a struggling parent nearly 15 years ago to an NVR practitioner and now standing beside him in admiration, was surreal.
The conference showcased a variety of enlightening workshops and thought-provoking presentation, all crafted to enhance our comprehension of how to effectively connect and resist. These sessions offered a wealth of knowledge, providing attendees with practical tools and strategies for real-world application.
The broad range of topics addressed allowed for an in-depth exploration of NVR, offering new perspectives and igniting meaningful conversations between all in attendance.
My workshop choice ~ Hope anchors the soul: Presented by Kathelijne van Dongen, experienced parents/youngsters and Haim Omer. This presentation was profoundly moving as it delved into the poignant journeys of two fathers and their daughters who faced the harrowing challenges of self-harm and attempted suicide. These stories were not just narratives of deep sorrow and intense struggles but they were also testimonies to the incredible power of presence, empathy and meaningful connections. The presentation highlighted how these profound relational gestures were instrumental in bringing hope, rebuilding fractured relationships and providing the much-needed strength to each family member.
When the fathers and daughters spoke about their part in the presentation, it painted a vivid picture of their emotional reconnection. It was evident in the expressions on their faces, the unwavering support they offered each other and the renewed sense of unity within their family circle. Such connections are crucial, as studies have shown that strong family support can significantly reduce the risks associated with mental health crises. The warmth of these renewed bonds was truly heartwarming, and I found myself moved to tears by the authenticity of their experiences.

The presentation underscored the impact of lived experiences as a powerful tool in understanding and overcoming mental health challenges within NVR. It is through sharing these real-life stories that we can foster a greater sense of empathy and support within our communities. As someone who has my own NVR journey, I was reminded of the resilience of the human spirit and the hope that can be found even in the darkest times. The message was clear: by standing together and offering compassion, we can illuminate the path to healing and recovery for not only our children but those who are struggling around us.
My Keynote choice ~ The power of presence in school, is a crucial element that fosters meaningful connections among students, teachers and the broader educational community. This concept eloquently presented by Martin Lemme, emphasizes the significance of getting and maintaining a sense of connection within the school environment. By actively engaging in interactions individuals can cultivate a sense of connectedness that transcends mere physical attendance.
Presence in education can be dissected into various dimensions that encompass emotional, intellectual and social aspects. Teachers in particular, play a pivotal role in facilitating these dimensions. By employing strategies that encourage cooperation and collaboration among students, educators can nurture an environment where everyone feels included and valued. The process dynamic model of presence, which incorporates the transformative field, serves as a framework for understanding and enhancing these interactions.
Reflecting on and strengthening one's own presence is not only beneficial for personal growth but also for the collective well-being of the school community. This reflective practice encourages individuals to be mindful of their contributions and the impact they have on others. Ultimately fostering a strong presence in school leads to a more cohesive and supportive learning environment, where every member feels empowered and connected.
Wandering through Amsterdam's charming streets beyond the scheduled sessions added a cultural layer to the experience. The city with its rich history and lively atmosphere, offered the perfect setting for informal networking and reflection. I was lucky enough to stay on an enchanting boat moored just beyond the vibrant core of Amsterdam near the tranquil Eastern Docklands. The experience was truly remarkable. The boat with its quaint and compact living area, provided both comfort and a sense of adventure, merging cosiness with novelty. The interiors were cleverly designed, making the most of the space while maintaining a warm and welcoming ambience. A standout moment, however, was enjoying the splendid weather from the stern of the Svalbard. With the sun beaming and a gentle breeze, it was an ideal spot to relax and take in the picturesque surroundings after each day's learning’s.
Amsterdam's Eastern Docklands, known for its maritime heritage and contemporary architecture created a stunning backdrop, offering a contrast between the traditional and the modern. This area often overlooked by tourists is a hidden treasure, showcasing a unique blend of cultural diversity and modern living. As I sat there, I felt immensely grateful for the chance to experience such a distinctive and memorable part of Amsterdam life, whilst attending a magnificent conference. Yet, the highlight of the trip was undoubtedly the delightful canal cruise, providing scenic views of Amsterdam's iconic waterways and historic structures, further enriching my stay in this beautiful city.
